Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice that has existed in Liberia for many years.
According to a FGM Research Initiative Report, about 31.8% of Liberian women and girls are presently living with the consequences of this harmful practice and many more are at risk. These women and girls have little choice in this matter, with reports of forced mutilations being common. The practice is considerably more prevalent among women who live in rural areas.
Because of the taboo nature of the subject, not much education through awareness is provided thus leaving these girls and women to suffered many health consequences in silence.
Bethlehem Health Care Inc. as part of its organization strategy is providing interventions creating awareness against Female Genital Mutilation and other harmful Cultural Practices through education, support, supply of medical items and clothing.
Through these efforts many women and girls are now beginning to be sensitized about the harmful nature of these practices and its health implications.
Our Organization is currently working in several counties where FGM and other harmful cultural practices are still dominant. We are currently providing support and creating awareness on how children and young females can keep safe from such harmful practices. These awareness campaigns are currently taken place in Rural Montserrado, Margibi, Bong, Nimba and Lofa counties and with plans to reach out to other counties when funding is available.
